Word of the Day... July 8, 2013...

Dear children, keep away from anything that might take
God's place in your hearts. 1 John 5:21
God tells us that we are to have no other gods before Him.  I was talking to my grandson Alaka’i the other day and he was busily putting his football cards in order.  He could tell me who each player was and what position they played and he went on and on about them.

Believe it or not, idolatry comes naturally to all of us. Why? Because we are humans we have a need to worship. He had watched Moses with me several times and we had talked about idol worship while studying the Bible. So I asked him “Do you think those football cards could be an idol of yours?  He looked at me like I was crazy. He told me “Of course not Grandma, I love the Lord.”

So I asked him “do you love the Lord more then you love those cards?”  He said  of course I do. I went on to ask him if he spends as much time with Jesus as he does those cards?  “Uh.. not today”…  Are you as excited to spend time talking and visiting Jesus as you are playing with those pieces of paper? “Oh Grandma, they aren't just paper they are really cool football players!!!”  I asked him to think about it.

He came back to me a little later and asked me if football cards could be like that golden cow in Moses. I told him yes they could be if they were more important to him then Jesus was.  I told him that he could keep his cards but nothing or one should come before the Lord. He agreed and told me that Jesus was the most important thing to him.

That little boy warmed my heart and told me that he didn't want anything to come before Jesus in his life.  It is just that sometimes he forgets and gets excited with his toys.  I told him that I recognized it in him because I have seen it in myself and I didn't want him to be fooled.

Every morning when he gets ready for his day he puts on the armor of God before he leaves the house.  He fastens the belt of truth around his waist, then he puts the breastplate of righteousness across his chest.  Then he pretends to put on the shoes that will keep him ready to share Jesus and His peace. Then it is the mighty shield of faith to ward off the flaming arrows from the evil one. The next thing he puts on is his helmet of salvation.  I love it when he does this because he asks the Holy Spirit to give him a fill up. Now the very last thing that he puts on is I think his favorite thing.  The sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.

The human sin nature gets in there sometimes so we have to have our minds focused on the Lord.  He must be the passion in our lives and have first place in our hearts. It’s okay to love what you do or to love playing sports, but never forget who comes first.  For a Christian that is always the Lord Jesus Christ.  I hope you have a Simply Heavenly day!!!
