Word of the Day... June 1, 2013

Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall receive mercy.
Matthew 5:7
My grandson has a heart for the homeless and every Saturday he goes with his Mommy and our church to feed the homeless.  Alaka’i passes out packages of personal hygiene products to them, which include soap, shampoo, lotion, a comb and a hair brush toothpaste and a tooth brush. He also helps to serve the food. He really loves caring for them and told me that he wished that he could do more.

Helping the homeless and less fortunate should be a concern for every one whether we are Christians or not. Knowing that in this economy there but for the grace of God go each and every one of us.  Mercy is a concern for people in need. It has to do with assisting those less fortunate than ourselves, including those who suffer the consequences of disappointment, disease, and distress.

Mercy is God’s ministry to the miserable.  It's not simply some feeling of sympathy or sadness over somebody in trouble, but really getting inside the other person's skin, feeling what they feel, understanding their misery, and then helping them through it.

I love to see the Holy Spirit beaming through my grandson when he comes home after feeding the homeless. It is all he can talk about and asks me to make chili or stew for him to take the next week because people are hungry and need good food.  For me cooking is a joy, but it goes up another notch when I know that the food I prepared is helping nourish someone’s soul.  It is a Simply Heavenly feeling!
